FTA gives FDOT green light to begin final design for central Florida commuter-rail system

The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have received Federal Transit Administration approval to enter the final design phase for a proposed 61-mile system.

The project calls for building a 17-station commuter-rail system between DeLand, Orlando, downtown Kissimmee and Poinciana. Trains would operate over existing CSX Transportation tracks.

FDOT now can enter into a contract with a design-build firm and, once the Florida legislature approves a liability agreement, apply for a Full Funding Grant Agreement through the FTA.
