England's Merseyrail names Cubic preferred fare gate supplier

Liverpool, England’s Merseyrail recently selected Cubic Transportation Systems Ltd. as the preferred supplier for an automated gating system.

Once Merseyrail issues the $3.8 million contract, Cubic would build, deliver and install its Universal Gate, a modular access-control and fare-management system designed with technology that complies with the commuter-rail agency’s safety requirements, according to a prepared statement.

The gates will enable Merseyrail to increase passenger safety, reduce fraud and fare evasion, and track system ridership, according to Cubic.

The gates will be installed at 66 stations, and designed to accept the magnetic strip farecards that Merseyrail plans to use. They also will include Cubic’s Tri-Reader®, which can process any type of contactless smart card that meets international standards.
