BART increases security measures
advertisement
Although passenger rail systems — like many businesses throughout the nation — have been on heightened alert since Sept. 11, Bay Area Rapid Transit Oct. 9 is upping the security ante by:
• increasing its police presence systemwide and continuing to monitor all trains in key locations, as it has since Sept. 11;
• closing all station restrooms until further notice;
• temporarily operating all subway elevators on an on-call basis only (although other station elevators will continue to operate normally, customers wishing to use elevators at subway stations will need to call a station agent on the intercom for assistance);
• removing all garbage containers from the platform level of the system’s subway stations (BART officials are asking passengers to dispose of their trash on the concourse level of affected stations); and
• urging passengers not to leave packages, suitcases or other large items on cars or trains, and notify BART of any unattended packages, suitcases, briefcases, backpacks or other large items.
