TSI languishes at eight-year low in January, BTS says

In January, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) rose 0.6 percent from December’s level to 99.4, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). Nonetheless, the index dropped 1.1 percent vs. January 2009’s TSI and tumbled to its lowest January level since 2002.

January’s Freight TSI of 96.6 rose 0.4 percent from December’s level, but declined 1.3 percent from January 2009’s count and fell to its lowest January point since 1997.

January’s Passenger TSI of 109.5 increased 1.2 percent from December’s index and decreased 0.5 percent from January 2009’s level — marking the first consecutive January-over-January declines in the TSI’s 20-year history, according to BTS.
