Siemens Mobility Inc. has obtained a $390.4 contract to provide Metro Transit-St. Louis with up to 55 new light-rail vehicles (LRVs) to replace aging MetroLink trains.

The Bi-State Development Board of Commissioners approved the contract with Siemens to provide new high-floor LRVs, as well project management, support and testing services, spare parts, tools and diagnostic equipment, Bi-State officials said in a press release.

The new MetroLink vehicles will be paid for, in part, with $196 million in federal funds awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation earlier this year.

"These new MetroLink vehicles are significant to ensuring the MetroLink system operates efficiently and continues to provide quality service to our customers across the region," said Taulby Roach, president and CEO of Bi-State Development, which operates Metro Transit-St. Louis.

The MetroLink system operates 75 vehicles, which are more than 20 or 30 years old and have traveled over 1 million miles each. Fifteen of the vehicles have topped the 2-million-mile mark.

Many of the MetroLink cars are operating well beyond the typical expected 25-year service life, Metro Transit-St. Louis officials said.
