USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service unveils container availability report

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) recently developed an Ocean Shipping Container Availability Report (OSCAR) to help shippers locate marine containers.

The weekly report provides a snapshot of shipping equipment available at 18 intermodal locations for westbound transpacific trade lanes, AMS officials said in a prepared statement. OSCAR also includes an aggregate count of available equipment from participating ocean carriers and two-week forecasts on container availability at each location.

More than 20 percent of the nation’s exports by volume are moved in containers, according to the AMS.

“Agricultural exporters, particularly those in the U.S. heartland, often face great difficulty in finding available marine shipping containers,” said Arthur Neal, AMS' deputy administrator of transportation and marketing. “This new report was developed to provide more information to help facilitate the exporting of agricultural products.”

OSCAR can be accessed online at http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/ATContainerReport.
