The Port of Long Beach is soliciting feedback on its draft supplemental report examining the potential environmental impacts of changes to its ongoing $2.2 billion Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility project in California.
Modifications to the ongoing project could include relocating utilities and connections, adding construction staging and equipment laydown areas, adjusting rail tracks, pavement restriping and closing portions of two roads, port officials said in a press release. Additionally, the Berths D52-D54 transit shed would be reconfigured to accommodate realigning Pico Avenue.
Once completed, the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility will shift more cargo to on-dock rail, reducing truck traffic. Construction began in 2024 and is expected to wrap up in 2032, port officials said. The facility will increase the existing rail yard from 82 acres to 171 acres; and more than triple the volume of on-dock rail cargo the port can handle annually, from 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent units to 4.7 million TEUs.
A virtual public hearing on the drafted report will be held Sept. 24. Registration can be done here
