Sucro Can Canada Inc. and Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority officials last week marked the official opening of Sucro's new sugar refinery at the Port of Hamilton in Ontario.

The CA$135 million facility has direct access to rail, highway and marine transportation services. The port is served by CN and CPKC.

“This strategic location allows [us] to efficiently receive raw sugar by vessel and reliably distribute refined products to food manufacturers across Ontario, Quebec and the U.S. Midwest, helping reduce reliance on currently constrained or distant sugar supply sources,” Sucro officials said in a press release.

Construction of the new refinery began in April 2024 and was completed in April 2026. The facility is set to become Canada’s largest sugar refinery over time, with planned refining capacity of up to 1 million metric tons annually as operations continue to scale, Sucro and port officials said.

The refinery will gradually increase volume each year, first receiving up to 10 vessels during the remainder of 2026. About 14 vessels are expected to be received in 2027.

Sucro first established operations at the port in 2014, marking its entry into Hamilton as a Canadian refining base.
