APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas S.A. de C.V. recently signed a 32-year concession contract with the port authority of the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain a new container terminal at the port.
APM Terminals plans to start phased construction by September on the $900 million project. The first phase, to cost more than $300 million, is slated for completion in 2015. APM Terminals has signed a design-build contract with Empresas ICA S.A.B. de C.V., a major Mexican contractor.
To be served by Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V., the terminal will include a container yard, administration building, warehouse and gates. The facility also will feature modern on-dock rail facilities to accommodate growing intermodal volumes, as well as seven super-post Panamax gantry cranes, electric yard cranes and other specialized equipment, APM officials said in a prepared statement.
"This agreement shows our confidence in the future of the Mexican market,” said JD Nielsen, managing director of APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas. “Our investment and expertise will help transform the nation’s competitiveness through an efficient, integrated port and inland service network.”
