U.S. DOT allocates funds to rebuild major Manhattan transit center

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently received a $50 million initial grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to rebuild the Fulton Street Transit Center, which was destroyed by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The center connected several lower Manhattan transit lines.

The grant would help fund environmental and preliminary engineering work for the transit center — the first of three projects New York Gov. George Pataki specifically requested funding for.

Last year, Congress appropriated $4.55 billion in federal aid to rebuild and enhance transportation projects designed to improve mobility in lower Manhattan. Since then, MTA, Federal Transit Administration and Federal Emergency Management Agency have been working with New York City officials to identify and prioritize transportation capital investment projects that require the funding.
