Last week, the San Francisco Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission announced it will provide $9 million in regional bridge toll funds to help finance a new passenger-rail station in Fairfield, Calif. The commitment closes the funding gap for the $40 million Fairfield-Vacaville station.
To be served by Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains running between Auburn and San Jose, the station will feature a passenger platform, parking lot, transfer area for bus passengers and pedestrian underpass.
The Fairfield City Council expects to award a management services contract for the project at its Dec. 15 meeting. Environmental work is scheduled to be complete in March 2009, with construction slated to begin in 2011. The station is expected to open in 2013.
The project also will be funded through state and federal grants, developer fees and contributions from the cities of Fairfield and Vacaville.
