CN fined for diesel fuel discharge into river

CN will pay a CA$2.6 million in fines for a diesel fuel discharge into the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Class I must pay a provincial fine of CA$125,000 and a federal fine of CA$2.5 million after pleading guilty last week to environmental violations, according to a press release issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The federal fine will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund. The charges are related to an April 9 report of an oil sheen on the North Saskatchewan River. City and environmental officers traced the substance through Edmonton's storm drain system to an engine fueling station at CN's Bissell Yard.

A joint investigation with the Alberta Environment and Parks agency determined the oil-water separator and fuel storage system at Bissell Yard was not compliant with various environmental regulations. An estimated 90 liters of diesel was released to the storm sewer.
