Rail News: Amtrak

"A new, modern station would improve the overall customer experience for passengers on Amtrak's Crescent route," ARC officials said in describing the potential impact of a new Amtrak station location in downtown Atlanta.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) and city of Atlanta are exploring potential locations for a new downtown Amtrak station that would replace the existing station on Peachtree Street in Midtown.

Relocating and modernizing the Atlanta Amtrak Station could create opportunities to improve customer service, ADA-accessibility and multimodal connections for rail travelers, ARC officials said in its "Passenger Rail Station Alternative Analysis" report.

"The relocated station would also serve as a signature local destination and gateway to the city for visitors while providing scalability for longer term service improvements between Atlanta and other cities," said ARC officials. "A new, modern station would improve the overall customer experience for passengers on Amtrak’s Crescent route," which links Atlanta to New Orleans; Birmingham, Alabama; Charlotte, North Carolina; Washington, D.C., and New York City.

ARC is soliciting public input on the report, which explores potential locations in the downtown area. ARC and city officials anticipate making draft recommendations based on responses from a community survey and stakeholder meetings sometime this fall. Additional stakeholder and public meetings are slated for December.

Amtrak officials last year indicated interest in building a new downtown Atlanta station in the railroad's general and legislative report for fiscal-year 2025, Urbanize Atlanta reported
