Amtrak's Borealis service between the Twin Cities and Chicago carried its 250,000th passenger over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The Borealis is operated daily by Amtrak under contracts with the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois departments of transportation. The service has routinely exceeded ridership expectations since it launched on May 23, 2024, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

Borealis trains originate from St. Paul at midday and from Chicago in late morning. The service includes a stop in Milwaukee.

“The Borealis continues to be a success story in Wisconsin and our partner states,” said Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Kristina Boardman. “This 250,000-rider milestone clearly demonstrates the need for safe, reliable and efficient passenger-rail travel options."
