Union Pacific Railroad has been rated North America’s best performing railroad for intermodal service in 2025 on the intermodal service scorecard published by the Journal of Commerce.
UP was ranked the best Class I for performance in intermodal service in the journal's spring and fall surveys for 2025. In the latest survey, which covers the second half of 2025, the railroad received “good” or “very good” ratings from 80% of respondents, UP officials said in a press release.
Customers gave high marks to UP’s terminal gate processes for both inbound and outbound containers and for equipment availability, they said.
“We put a high value on our customers and their feedback. It’s why this recognition is so meaningful, because it comes from the people and businesses we serve,” said UP Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales Kenny Rocker.
The Class I has continued to expand intermodal service. In August 2025, UP announced a new domestic intermodal service product, connecting the City of Industry in Southern California to UP's new terminal in Kansas City, Missouri. During that same month, UP introduced a new, truck-competitive domestic intermodal service connecting Southern California’s Inland Empire region to Chicago.
And in September 2025, UP and Norfolk Southern Railway announced a new domestic intermodal service connecting UP customers in western and southern markets with NS' modernized intermodal facilities in Louisville, Kentucky.
