Rail News: Union Pacific Railroad

Idaho city advances quiet zone project at UP crossings

advertisement

In late March, the city of Caldwell, Idaho, approved a plan to advance a quiet zone project involving seven Union Pacific Railroad grade crossings.

Estimated to cost $240,000, the quiet zone will be established at crossings located at Kimball, 5th, 9th, 12th and 21st Avenues, Linden Street and Ustick Road. A quiet zone calls for eliminating the use of train horns in specific areas if federally required safety measures are implemented at impacted crossings.

The city council authorized the installation of additional security features at the crossings that are designed to increase safety for both motorists and pedestrians. Work is expected to begin in June.

The city plans to coordinate the project with contractors and partners  including UP  to implement the crossing upgrades.
