• Axion International won an order for recycled plastic crossties from an undisclosed rail line operator in a major South American city — the supplier’s first tie order in South America, according to a prepared statement. The operator has ordered various sizes of ties, ranging from nine feet to 20 feet in length. The composite ties will replace wood ties, which currently are installed on a vast majority of the city’s metro line, according to Axion.

• In the first quarter of fiscal-year 2011/2012, Alstom’s orders rebounded, climbing 44 percent compared with the same period in the prior fiscal year, Alstom officials said in a prepared statement. However, total sales declined 12 percent, reflecting “the low level of orders taken during the economic downturn,” they said. Although transport orders were strong, the company won only small- and medium-size projects. “No large ones were booked over the period,” Alstom officials said. Transport sales were in line with the fourth quarter of the prior fiscal year, but fell 22 percent overall.

• Kelso Technologies Inc. announced it established its first assembly plant for the Klincher™ manway securement system by purchasing a 6,000-square-foot building in Bonham, Texas. In addition, the company has begun commercial sales and distribution activities. Kelso plans to produce 1,800 to 3,000 Klincher systems annually; the first units are expected to enter the market in late 2011. The systems are targeted at the OEM market for new tank car production, and the car retrofit and repair market. Kelso also announced that board member David Chaiko has resigned.

• International Fuel Technology Inc. signed an agreement with Romanian rail operator Regiotrans SRL to begin field trials of the DiesoLiFT™ 10 fuel additive. Regiotrans SRL plans to test the additive in its entire locomotive fleet. DiesoLiFT 10, which can be used with diesel or bio-diesel blends, is designed to reduce fuel consumption and air emissions.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff has named George Walton area manager of its Orlando, Fla., office. Most recently the company’s southeast planning manager, Walton will oversee operations in central and north Florida, including transit and transportation projects. He has experience in transportation and environmental planning, project development and conceptual engineering.
