Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) recently awarded a $3.4 million contract to Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. to integrate its smart card technology into the agency’s ticket vending machines.
Passengers will be able to load fare value onto an "electronic purse" on a smart card. The purse is designed to securely store cash value on an electronic chip, enabling customers to use their smart card like an electronic wallet.
The contract is a follow-on to an original $44 million contract under which Cubic designed, built and integrated a fare-collection system for BART last year. The agency also awarded a $7 million contract to Cubic to link the fare collection system with TransLink®, a regional smart card program that enables passengers to pay for all Bay area public transit modes using a single card.
