Under the three, three-year GEC contracts, HNTB will serve as an extension of the authority's staff and aid in the development, management and administration of MBTA’s facilities.

The scope of work includes: engineering maintenance, design, training and inspection services for track, roadbed, environmental and safety issues (track GEC contract); engineering design, inspection and maintenance oversight services for signal and communications systems (signal and communications GEC); and engineering design and inspection services, technical management and maintenance oversight on the overhead catenary system (power GEC).

HNTB served as the GEC for the three disciplines for the prior three-year term.
