Queensland Transport awards Cubic $95 million ticketing-system contract

Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. and Cubic Transportation Systems-Australia Pty Ltd. recently were awarded a $95 million contract by Australia’s Queensland Government to design, build, operate and maintain the first smart card-based integrated ticketing system and regional public transport services for Queensland Transport.

Cubic will install its "open system" smart card ticketing technology, which will link most urban rail, bus and ferry services in the South East Queensland region, and enabe passengers to use one card to pay for all fares.

The new system is scheduled to begin trials in late 2004. Once the system is commissioned, Queensland Transport plans to turn all ticketing system services to Cubic for at least 10 years. Cubic and Queensland Transport would share secondary revenue accrued from third party applications and commercial opportunities.

Cubic also will develop a Web site to enable passengers to order and register cards, query accounts and increase card value. Passengers also will be able to increase card value at rail stations.
