Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

3PL Cornerstone Systems to start offering rail-transportation services

Last week, Cornerstone Systems announced it will begin offering rail transportation services and named Burke Anderson vice president of rail-car services to develop a marketing strategy.

Anderson previously served The Hub Group and Canadian Pacific Railway in various transportation, marketing and management positions.

"We are seeing a paradigm shift in how railroads view third parties marketing traditional rail-car services, particularly third-party logistics companies that commit dedicated sales and operating resources," said Anderson in a prepared statement.

Shippers who haven't used box cars to move materials for between 15 and 20 years are beginning to use rail again to reduce freight costs, Cornerstone Systems officials believe. The transportation and logistics service provider plans to attract rail shippers by arranging transloadings, offering damage-prevention consultation and providing one-invoice billing.

"Identifying reload opportunities to reduce empty miles on railroad box-car fleets will be a strong focus," said Anderson.
