Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

Panasonic provides communication system for NYCT subway cars


Earlier this year, Panasonic Transportation Systems Co. began delivering digital communication systems to ALSTOM Transportation and Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., which will install the systems on MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) R160 subway cars.

The car builders contracted Panasonic to supply its Trainline Multiplexer and Trainline Controller communication systems for the cars, which will be delivered between late 2005 and 2008.

So far, NYCT has ordered 660 cars from Kawasaki and ALSTOM, but the contract includes options that could boost the total to 1,040 cars.
