Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals
Last year, RMI added 67 regionals and short lines to the list of customers using its RailConnect® Transportation Management System (TMS). Now, more than 300 small roads use the Web-based system to help manage day-to-day operations.
This year, RMI expects to add dozens more railroads to its customer base. Currently, more than 75 percent of U.S., Canadian and Mexican regionals and short lines use one or more of the company’s RailConnect suite of services, including TMS, Revenue Management Services, Equipment Management Services, and Freight and Fleet Management Services.
A number of small roads also are implementing m-Crew, a mobile computing application RMI rolled out in April 2004. Using a touch-screen tablet personal computer, and satellite or cellular communications, crews can receive and input real-time work order information, and provide up-to-the-minute train location and switching data.
“By leveraging m-Crew, short lines and regionals were able to gain mobile computing solutions that resulted in increased operational efficiencies and improved timeliness of supply-chain event reporting,” RMI officials said in a prepared statement.
