Savage Tooele Railroad on Sept. 17 began operations at Lakeview Business Park in Grantsville, Utah. It is the first short line to open in Utah in more than a century.

The 11-mile short line was developed by Savage, a privately held supply chain infrastructure and solutions provider, in conjunction with Union Pacific Railroad. It provides business park tenants an alternative to trucking logistics in the region, Savage officials said in a press release.

The Surface Transportation Board approved Savage Tooele Railroad's creation in 2024. Construction began in November 2024. The short line will operate five days a week with a 286,000-pound gross rail load capacity. Shipments will begin later this month.

The railroad connects the Lakeview Business Park, which spans 1,700 acres and was developed by the Romney Group and Prologis, with a UP mainline near Interstate 80, Savage officials said.

"This new connection expands options, reduces transportation costs and enables faster distribution—making the park an even more attractive place to do business," said aid Gus Gradinger, vice president of customer led development at Prologis.
