New Jersey DOT accepting freight-rail grant applications

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is accepting applications from short lines for 2027 Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP) grants through Oct. 9.

RFAP annually provides $25 million in competitive grant funding for capital improvements to existing freight transportation services and projects that make it easier for businesses to access freight-rail service. The selection process places an emphasis on projects that strengthen port commerce connectivity, help eliminate missing rail links to New Jersey's port facilities or upgrade tracks to a 286,000-pound carrying capacity, NJDOT officials said in a press release.

Grants will cover 90% of selected projects' estimated costs; applicants will be responsible for the remaining 10% of project costs. Applicants must have an eligibility assessment form approved through the state's online grant management system prior to submitting an application, NJDOT officials said. The online grant system can be accessed here.
