The North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) has awarded two $500,000 Build Ready Sites grants to prepare rail-served industrial sites for future economic development opportunities.
Harnett County and the city of Greensboro, North Carolina, will each receive funds to support site preparation work, including clearing, grading, engineering and access improvements. The investments are designed to reduce development barriers and strengthen the sites’ competitiveness for rail-served industries, NCRR officials said in a press release.
“The best time to prepare for an economic development opportunity is before it arrives,” said Carl Warren, president and CEO of the NCRR. “Build Ready Sites gives communities the resources to reduce development risk and put stronger sites in front of companies looking to invest in North Carolina.”
In Harnett County, the grant will fund work to make an 83-acre site at Byrd Industrial Sites in Lillington accessible for rail-served manufacturers. The site is one of the three within the 224-acre property, two of which are already rail-served.
Greensboro’s grant will support preparation of the 132-acre Reedy Fork Industrial Site near Summit Avenue and Brown Summit Road in Guilford County. The site includes five tracts being prepared for future industrial development.
NCRR also opened applications yesterday for the next round of Build Ready Sites funding. Applications will be accepted through Oct. 2.
