ASLRRA to honor North Shore Railroad for support of U.S. military veterans

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association will present the 2026 Veterans Engagement Award to North Shore Railroad at ASLRRA's annual meeting next month.

The award honors ASLRRA member railroads that go above and beyond to recruit, retain and support U.S. military service members. In addition to strong internal hiring and recognition programs, recipients must demonstrate meaningful, sustained engagement with veterans and military organizations in the communities they serve, according to ASLRRA's most recent "Views & News" newsletter.

North Shore Railroad stood out in every category; it pairs highly visible community engagement with an equally strong commitment to the veterans within its own workforce, showing appreciation through its actions, ASLRRA officials said.

For example, North Shore in 2024 unveiled two locomotives honoring military service and sacrifice; in 2025, the company raised $12,000 for two nonprofit organizations benefiting veterans; and overall the railroad has raised $32,000 for veterans organizations through ticket and merchandise sales.

In addition, honorably discharged veterans who apply for jobs at North Shore are automatically placed on a preferred candidate list. Today, veterans make up 15% of the company’s workforce.

"With its actions, North Shore Railroad sets a standard for how short lines can meaningfully support those who have served," ASLRRA officials said in the newsletter. The association's annual meeting will be held April 12-14 in Minneapolis.
