On Dec. 29, OmniTRAX Inc. announced that BP Products North America has begun shipping liquid asphalt through a new terminal located on a line operated by its Chicago Rail Link (CRL) subsidiary.
Asphalt is barged to the new terminal and loaded into rail cars by Asphalt Operating Services of Chicago, the terminal’s owner, developer and operator. CRL then switches the cars and transports them to interchange for distribution throughout North America. Union Tank Car Co. provides onsite car repair and inspection services.
To prepare for the new business, CRL upgraded its main rail yards and crossings.
“We view this as a model for rail-served industrial development projects,” said OmniTRAX President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Long in a prepared statement.
OmniTRAX owns 17 regionals and short lines serving 11 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces, and provides various transportation-related services.
