Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has wrapped up installation of 715 next-generation fare gates at 50 stations four months ahead of the anticipated deadline, BART announced yesterday.

The project was formally completed Sept. 26 at the West Dublin/Pleasanton Station. The gates feature a unique door-locking mechanism that makes barriers harder to push through, jump over or duck under, BART officials said in a press release.

BART now will focus on utilizing advanced sensors to make it harder for people to pass through the gates by closely following paying riders, they said.

Riders are already witnessing fewer instances of fare evasion as the gates have been installed across the system. In second-quarter 2025, only 10% of riders reported seeing fare evasion, compared to 22% in Q1 2025, BART officials said.

In 2023, BART awarded  a $47 million contract to STraffic America for the gate installation.
