Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI), in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration and the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, announced $219,155 in competitive rail safety awareness grants to OLI programs in 11 states.
The grants will support grade-crossing safety and trespassing prevention public education campaigns, OLI officials said in a press release. Many of the campaigns are scheduled for "See Tracks? Think Train!" week to be held Sept. 15-21.
The states of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington received funding for projects including translations for digital outreach campaigns, partnerships with Minor League Baseball to engage families in rail safety discussions, social media campaigns against dangerous activities such as subway surfing and rail safety education for truck drivers.
“FRA is very pleased to continue its support of Operation Lifesaver Inc.’s lifesaving efforts to combat preventable grade crossing and trespassing incidents and casualties,” said James Payne, staff director of the FRA grade crossing and trespasser outreach division. “This grant funding allows OLI state organizations to conduct highly effective public outreach to deter the leading cause of rail-related deaths.”
