Ohio panel OKs $1.2M in rail crossing safety upgrades

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) on May 14 approved over $1.2 million in grade crossing safety upgrades in Wyandot, Fayette and Washington Counties.

Belpre Industrial Parkersburg Railroad will install flashing lights and gates at a crossing in Belpre, Washington County, by May 14, 2026, PUCO officials said in a press release. Federal funds will contribute $509,506 for the project.

The Indiana & Ohio Railway Co. will be responsible for installing flashing lights and gates, and surface reconstruction at a crossing in Washington Courthouse, Fayette County, by Feb. 14, 2026. Federal funding will cover $420,315.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Fort Wayne & Eastern Railroad will be responsible for installing flashing lights and gates at a crossing in Kirby, Wyandot County by May 14, 2026, PUCO officials said in a press release. Federal funding will cover $307,173. 

Local governments may seek funding from PUCO for additional safety improvement projects such as rumble strips, improved lighting and signage.
