The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) this week approved safety upgrades at a CSX grade crossing in Union County.

The railroad will install flashing lights and gates at the Bearswamp Road and County Road 149 crossing by Dec. 4, 2025. Federal funds will contribute $634,169 to complete the project.

To increase public safety during project construction, Union County local government officials may seek funding up to $5,000 from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund for additional safety improvements such as rumble strips, illumination and improved signage, according to a PUCO press release.

The PUCO is responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices.
