The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) last week approved federal funding for safety upgrades at a grade crossing in the city of Dresden, Muskingum County.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc.'s Ohio Central Railroad (OHCR) must install flashing lights, gates, curbs and sidewalks at the State Route 208 and Muskingum Avenue grade crossing by Nov. 18, PUCO officials said in a press release.

The total cost of the upgrades is $201,606, PUCO officials said. Federal funds will cover 80% and OHCR will pay remaining $40,321.

The OHCR operates 71 miles of track. It interchanges with the Columbus & Ohio River Rail Road in Morgan Run and Zanesville, Ohio; CSX in Columbus, Ohio; Norfolk Southern Railway in Columbus and Goulds, Ohio; the Ohio Southern Railroad in Zanesville; and the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in Harmon, Ohio.

G&W acquired the railroad in 2008.
