During the past few months, Norfolk Southern Railway has been stressing a back-to-basics safety approach to transportation department workers. The Class I has been conducting eight-hour safety workshops, which cover such topics as communication, leading injury causes and a history of the railroad's safety policies, according to NS' January newsletter.

"The better trained our employees are and the more knowledge they have to complete their work assignments, the safer they will be," said Tony Ingram, NS senior vice president, transportation network and mechanical.

Workshops are facilitated by a conductor or engineer, and supervisor from a respective division. Attended by more than 14,000 employees, the workshops conclude with a discussion on local issues.

In May, NS earned the E.H. Harriman Memorial Safety Awards "gold" or top Group A honor for the 14th-straight year.
