FRA awards grant to eliminate rail crossing in Minnesota

Minnesota’s Kandiyohi County has been awarded a $4.8 million federal grant to eliminate a grade crossing in Willmar by constructing an overpass.

The funds are part of $570 million in grant awards that the Federal Railroad Administration awarded to 32 states under the Railroad Crossing Elimination grant program, which seeks to close or replace dangerous grade crossings.

The FRA grant award will help pay for the design and construction of an overpass over a BNSF Railway Co. line. The project includes the reconstruction of 1 mile of a rural two-lane highway, according to a press release issued by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).

The project will be designed to improve regional railroad operations and facilitate multimodal freight movement by constructing new rail access to a nearby industrial park, according to the press release.

“This federal funding will help boost efficiency and improve safety along the rail line. Investments in our infrastructure serve as a down payment on the long-term economic well-being of our state,” Klobuchar said.

The county has committed to a 50% match of the grant.
