Emergency responders complete UP-sponsored training course at TTCI

Last month, 24 emergency responders completed a five-day Union Pacific Railroad-sponsored tank-car safety course at the Association of American Railroad's Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI) in Pueblo, Colo.

The course included classroom exercises on different car types and the use of resource materials describing cars, fittings and tank-car construction during an emergency.

The course also featured field exercises on assessing car damage, making repairs, transferring hazardous materials from damaged equipment, and using protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus, as well as simulated haz-mat accidents.

Since 1986, UP has sponsored 35 training programs at TTCI involving 730 emergency responders. Since 1979, the Class I also has offered local haz-mat training programs through which more than 160,000 emergency responders received training.
