NJ Transit improves pedestrian crossings at stations

New Jersey Transit’s $3 million train station safety program is a little more than one-third complete. Since the program was launched in late July, the agency has improved pedestrian crossings at 12 stations.

Designed to prevent passengers from crossing tracks behind a train pulling out of a station, the Customer Safety Fencing Program calls for adding supplemental fencing, pylons and signage along tracks at 33 stations. The fence channels arriving passengers off the platform directly in front of crossing gates, bells and flashing lights.

The program is scheduled to be complete by 2007’s end.
