Trimble Railway Solutions: End-to-end on-board and wayside monitoring solutions

Trimble Railway Asset Solutions offers an array of technologies to monitor, maintain, and manage rail transport assets. From on-board remote diagnostic and condition monitoring to trackside vision technology, Trimble solutions manage the life of rail assets from operation through maintenance and repair.

On-board monitoring. Interoperable and flexible Trimble rail asset lifecycle products are delivered as software as a service (SaaS) solutions, minimizing data storage and hardware investment and providing a "seamless solution for on-board monitoring across component and fleet types," the company says.

Trimble R2M remote diagnostic monitoring system combines shore-based software and on-train equipment to deliver alerts of faults in real time for condition-based maintenance. Trimble’s C2M combines measuring devices with software analytics to proactively monitor the condition of wheels, brakes, and other key components for wear and defects. Trimble P2M for in-service performance and planning uses timetable, actual vehicle location, and real-time diagnostics to identify root cause of delays and plan journeys for optimum timetable adherence.

Customers using Trimble railway asset solutions include South West Trains, Eurostar, SNCF, Irish Rail, the Go-Ahead group, Siemens, Alstom, Arriva and Greater Anglia.

Wayside monitoring. Beena Vision – A Trimble Company provides vision-based wayside detectors for the rolling stock maintenance market. Its non-contact measurement technology enables "highly detailed" condition assessment of train components — ranging from wheel surface condition to full train inspection — on trains operating in service and at high speeds, the company says.

Beena Vision's wayside systems, coupled with software applications and image analysis technology, enable Train Operating Companies (TOCs) to manage fleet maintenance and operation through automatic measurements and inspections. Real-time alarms, alerts and reports enable "significant reductions" in maintenance costs and increase fleet availability for revenue generation, the company says, adding that customers include most Class I railroads as well as other worldwide TOCs.
