Metrom Rail: Worker protection and MOW collision-avoidance systems

The limitations of legacy technology based on RF ranging have held railroads back in their efforts to improve worker protection and better prevent on-track collisions, Metrom Rail officials say.

In response to those challenges, Metrom Rail has introduced the AURA System, a product suite that includes advanced, reliable and cost-effective worker protection and MOW collision-avoidance and productivity systems, they say.

The AURA Roadway Worker protection System is designed to provide advanced warning between on-track equipment and workers. It offers accurate ranging between equipment and personnel in any environment, and ranging is enhanced underground or in tunnels, Metrom Rail officials say.

Wayside, train and worker-worn equipment work together to provide a minimum of 15 seconds of warning for workers and train operators at any speed. Modules contain data recorders and allow for contactless charging and data transfer. The system offers portability, a simple configuration and an easy-to-use interface.

The AURA Maintenance of Way Utility platform combines collision avoidance capabilities with a comprehensive productivity suite. The system can provide advanced warning of spacing violations and offers a speed-based detection system to protect MOW equipment, hi-rail vehicles and their operators. Users can monitor machine activity, functionality and location, assign work gangs and establish control points through AURA ACCESS, a web-based portal.
