LTK Perspective: A thorough understanding of all PTC technologies

By David Diaz, vice president of special projects and PTC practice lead

LTK has been involved with PTC since its inception and continues to be at the forefront of implementation, serving clients across the U.S. with their PTC needs. LTK has a dedicated, experienced PTC team that provides consulting engineering and program management services to railroads (commuter agencies and freight railroads) to assist in their compliance with the FRA’s PTC requirements, and PTC operations and maintenance needs.

LTK has been involved with the development and implementation of all FRA type-approved PTC systems/technologies that are currently being deployed across the country. As a result, we have a thorough understanding of all the technologies being used, including Enhanced Automatic Train Control (E-ATC), Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES), Electronic Train Management System (ETMS), Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS), Incremental Train Control System (ITCS) and Communications-Based Overlay Signal System (CBOSS). This depth of understanding and experience means our clients can avoid many of the implementation problems that have occurred in other places in an effort to meet the new deadlines.

LTK assists clients in the following areas:
● FRA Support – development of compliance related documentation (PTC implementation plans, development plans and safety plans);
● PTC System Implementation – development of system specifications, system procurement, design and integration management:
● PTC System Testing and Certification Support – provide testing oversight and development of material to support system certification; and
● PTC Operations and Maintenance Support – assist with development of PTC system maintenance plans, system troubleshooting, training and ongoing technical support.

Our PTC clients include MBTA, CDOT, Metro-North, LIRR, NJ Transit, SEPTA, Amtrak, Metra, DCTA, CapMetro, Metrolink, Sound Transit, Caltrain, SMART and TriMet, as well as the Genesee and Wyoming Railroad.

LTK is actively involved with I-ETMS developments and participates in the Interoperability Train Control Committee. Additionally, LTK participates on the AAR ACSES Committee.
