Bombardier Transportation provides both system integration services and products to assist railroads in implementing PTC by the federally mandated deadline. One such product developed for the PTC industry is the Temporary Speed Restriction (TSR) server. The design of the TSR is based on a 2 out of 2 (2oo2) safety architecture and is hosted on Bombardier’s safety hardware and software platforms. These platforms have been used for various safety applications throughout the world ranging from traditional computer based interlockings to “state of the art” communications-based train control vital zone controllers. The main function of the TSR server is to safely manage all temporary speed restrictions being entered by the control operators and to ensure communications of these speed restrictions to the appropriate PTC onboard computers.Temporary speed restrictions are utilized to protect work crews and degraded track areas by reducing the traffic speed through the affected area(s). Temporary speed restrictions have traditionally been implemented via paper forms and communications over voice radios.
