San Francisco Muni Metro Chooses New PCB test equipment ABI’s Electronic Repair Systems From Saelig

The San Francisco Municipal Railway (SFMTA) has awarded Saelig Co. Inc. a contract for the supply of ABI Electronics all-in-one board tester equipment for SFMTA's printed circuit board (PCB) repair, maintenance and schematic generation. SFMTA, the public transit system for the city and county of San Francisco and its network, includes seven light rail lines that operate both above ground and in the city's subway tube, as well as three cable car lines, and two heritage streetcar lines.

Onsite railcar, locomotive, and transportation vehicle PCB repair is often a headache for railroads and transit agencies, but it can be more cost effective to repair than replace. According to a Saelig spokesman, following the acquisition of 260 new Siemens’ S200 SF Light Rail Vehicles, the SFMTA was challenged with restructuring the electronic support shop in order to continue to repair and maintain the modern electronic systems installed in the new trains. The test solutions and simulators developed over the years to support the previous Breda LVR2/3 series would no longer be suitable, according to Saelig. Furthermore, the distribution of essential maintenance documentation for the new trains made it difficult for the team of experts at the SFMTA to develop customized test solutions. This situation prompted the management to procure alternative solutions.

Saelig says SFMTA approached ABI Electronics, a European company that specializes in the design and manufacture of electronic test, fault-finding and maintenance equipment, in September 2016 to find a suitable configuration solution for SFMTA's electronic repair center in San Francisco. ABI recommended its own products, which are also in use by more than 35 leading rail organizations around the world.  Following a public tender process completed in March 2017, ABI was chosen and Saelig Co. Inc., ABI’s master distributor in the USA, received a contract for US$180,000 for the supply of multiple equipment packages.

The ABI equipment packages include the BoardMaster Rack Solution, a universal PCB and component level tester that delivers more than 25 different test types; the JTAGMaster, a boundary scan tester and in-system programmer delivering the means to learn pin status and test FPGA devices that are found on most modern PCB designs; and RevEng, a schematic learning system capable of generating circuit diagrams from an existing PCB.
