advertisement
High gas prices, more development near stations and increased highway congestion helped the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) attract a record number of passengers in July. The agency carried more than 21 million passengers on its Metrorail system and averaged 811,559 riders per weekday.
WMATA achieved eight "Top 10" ridership days in July as well, including its highest-ever weekday ridership of 854,638.
The agency's previous all-time-high ridership was set in June, when WMATA carried 19.7 million passengers and averaged 798,456 weekday riders.
