The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently awarded several contracts totaling $52.3 million to deploy various security devices at mass transit facilities and airports.
The agency will purchase 12 passive millimeter wave devices from Planning Systems Inc. for $3 million and install the equipment in mass transit facilities. The devices are designed to detect and measure waves naturally emitted by a human body to determine if an item is concealed.
The TSA also awarded a $1.7 million contract to Spectrum San Diego to deploy 37 cast and prosthetics screening devices. Spectrum's CastScope can screen passengers with casts, braces, heavy bandages or prosthetics via X-ray to identify concealed items.
In addition, the TSA awarded contracts totaling $4 million to Nomadics, Inc. and Smiths Detection to provide handheld detection devices. TSA will purchase 200 of Nomadics' Fido PaxPoints to examine liquids and identify liquid explosives, and 23 of Smith Detection's SABRE mobile devices to detect explosives and potentially dangerous vapors.
