TIGER grants on way to Alabama, Tennessee for NS terminals
advertisement
Construction on two Norfolk Southern Railway intermodal terminals soon will begin along the Crescent Corridor now that Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program grants have been signed, sealed and almost delivered. Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced it finalized TIGER grant agreements totaling $105 million with the Alabama and Tennessee Departments of Transportation.
The Alabama DOT will receive $52.5 million to help fund construction of the 261-acre Birmingham Regional Intermodal Facility near McCalla, about 20 miles southwest of Birmingham. NS and other sources will cover the remainder of the project’s $97.5 million cost.
The Tennessee DOT will receive $52.5 million to help fund construction of the 380-acre Memphis Regional Intermodal Facility west of Rossville, about 27 miles east of downtown Memphis. NS and other sources will cover the remainder of the terminal’s $105.1 million price tag.
The facilities are a key part of NS’ planned 2,500-mile Crescent Corridor intermodal route, which would wind through 13 states between New Jersey and Louisiana. Proposed work also includes upgrading existing facilities and boosting rail capacity to accommodate additional domestic intermodal traffic.
