Yesterday, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced it reached a supply and license agreement with Brush Traction under which the United Kingdom-based rail equipment supplier will exclusively manufacture RailPower’s Green Goat® hybrid locomotive in the U.K. and Ireland. Brush Traction also retains exclusive rights to service and maintain the 2,000-horsepower switchers in the two countries.

Brush Traction — which produces locomotives and passenger vehicle propulsion systems — plans to convert a Class 86 locomotive chassis supplied by HSBC Rail into the first Green Goat produced under the pact.

“RailPower’s hybrid locomotive technology has significant
potential in the U.K. and Irish railway industries, where there is growing interest in reducing the impact of rising fuel prices,” said Brush Traction Managing Director John Bidewell in a prepared statement.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce emissions about 90 percent, and cut fuel usage between 50 percent and 80 percent compared with a conventional switcher.

“This [deal] is another critical step in our move to introduce our products into the European railway markets,” said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier.
