Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

RailAmerica registered more carloads in November

Yesterday, RailAmerica Inc. reported November carloads totaling 71,419 units, up 5.3 percent compared with November 2009 volume.

The holding company — which owns and operates 40 U.S. and Canadian short lines — increased shipments in nine of 12 commodity groups. RailAmerica officials attribute most of the traffic increase to stronger demand for coal, chemicals and non-metallic minerals.

Coal shipments primarily rose in the central U.S.; chemical volumes primarily climbed in the U.S. Midwest, Northeast and West regions; and non-metallic mineral shipment primarily rose in the U.S. Midwest, Central and Northeast regions, according to RailAmerica. Agricultural product and motor vehicle volumes posted the largest year-over-year declines.
