Proposed energy bill would authorize $350 million for freight-rail improvements

Earlier this month, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) introduced the Program for Real Energy Security or the PROGRESS Act (H.R. 1300), which would authorize millions of dollars for freight- and commuter-rail infrastructure improvements.

The bill primarily proposes to spur investments in future energy resources, encourage the development of renewable energy and alternative fuels (including biofuels), and establish conservation and efficiency programs. However, H.R. 1300 also would authorize about $350 million for freight-rail infrastructure upgrades, and provide grants for public transit and commuter-rail system improvements.

“[The bill] calls for a stimulus package to upgrade the ‘pipeline’ for biofuels — the freight-rail system,” said Hoyer in a prepared statement.
“This legislation is another important step in the effort to move America toward energy independence.”

The PROGRESS Act was referred to the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.
