Pacer International Jan. 17 named Tom Shurstad Pacer Stacktrain president and chief executive officer, succeeding Don Orris, who served as acting head of the unit since the position was vacated in July.
Shurstad — who in the 1980s served as an executive with former Pacer Stacktrain operator APL Ltd. — most recently served as chief executive officer of The Belt Railway of Chicago, which is owned by North America’s six largest railroads.
"Tom Shurstad is a highly customer-focused and experienced
executive with more than 30 years in the intermodal and rail sector," said Orris, who’ll continue to serve as chairman and chief executive officer of parent company Pacer International, in a prepared statement.
Shurstad also previously served as vice president and general manager of Southern Pacific Railroad until its 1995 merger with Union Pacific Railroad; director of intermodal services for Port of Seattle; and assistant vice president of operations, as well as conductor, brakeman and switchman, for Burlington Northern Railroad.
Pacer International, a non-asset based international third-party logistics provider, owns and operates Pacer Stacktrain, a doublestack rail network for both domestic and international containerized freight.
