The Ohio Department of Transportation is soliciting public input on Transport Ohio, the state's updated freight plan, which has been in the drafting phase for two years.
The plan focuses on the current state of Ohio's freight industry and expectations for the next five years. Ohio is in the "center of freight’s changing role," with activity running across more than 5,000 miles of freight-rail lines and 736 maritime system miles, ODOT officials said in a press release.
The state’s freight network moved more than 1 billion tons of goods worth over $1.2 trillion in 2018.
As Ohio’s freight network continues to respond to supply-chain challenges due to the pandemic, the plan analyzes the needs of the state’s roadway, rail, air cargo, maritime and pipeline networks. It also includes strategies for coordination, partnerships, innovation and technology implementation, as well as system investments to maintain Ohio’s industry leadership, officials said.
"While our freight system has served the state well, it must continue to adapt to evolving demands and pressures, structural trends, unmet needs and emerging opportunities," said ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks.
The public comment period is open online until April 10.
